The phrase *mishneh torat Moshe* (מִשְׁנֵה תּוֹרַת מֹשֶׁה) means literally 'a copy/repetition of the Torah of Moshe'—the same expression from which the Greek title *Deuteronomion* ('second law,' Deuteronomy) is derived. Torah inscribed publicly in stone at the threshold of the Promised Land is the covenant's founding charter: the nation is constituted not by ethnicity but by the Word. This resonates forward to Jer 31:33 and the New Covenant promise of Torah written not on stone but on the heart.
