The Hebrew uses a rare doubled construction—*sogeret umsugeret*—literally 'shutting and being shut shut,' a verbal intensification conveying total, irreversible closure. It is more than merely 'closed'; the city has sealed itself in dread. FOG renders 'bolted and barred' to capture this emphatic doubling through alliteration; FOG Message uses 'locked up tight' for visceral finality. The verse sets the stage not with military might but with paralysis: the great city of Yericho is already frozen in fear before a single Israelite takes a step.
