The narrative preserves two distinct sets of twelve stones: twelve carried to Gilgal (vv. 3-8) and twelve erected in the riverbed itself (v. 9). The submerged stones — invisible beneath the resumed current, standing at the exact site of the covenant crossing — carry powerful typological freight: stones planted in the deep mark the threshold between wilderness and inheritance, between the old life and the new. Later New Testament theology of baptism (Rom. 6:3-4; Col. 2:12) draws on precisely this imagery of passing through water as death-and-resurrection. The phrase עַד הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה (ad hayom hazeh — 'to this day') is the author's stamp of historical witness, anchoring the tradition in accessible, verifiable memory for the original audience.
