חֲמֻשִׁים (chamushim) may mean 'armed' or carry the sense of 'in military columns / rank of five' (from חָמֵשׁ, chamesh = five, suggesting ordered battle formation). The same word appears at the Exodus (Exod. 13:18), creating a deliberate verbal echo: Israel once marched out of Egypt chamushim; now they march into Canaan chamushim. The Transjordanian tribes — Reuven, Gad, half-Menashe — are fulfilling the pledge made to Moshe in Num. 32, leading the vanguard of conquest even though their own inheritance lay east of the Yarden. FOG renders 'armed,' preserving the martial sense; FOG Message 'in battle formation,' favouring the ordered-column interpretation.
