*Vayikrot Yehoshua berit*—'Joshua *cut* a covenant.' The verb *karat* ('to cut') is the standard covenant idiom, rooted in the ancient practice of cutting animals in two and walking between the halves as an enacted self-curse: 'may what happened to these animals happen to me if I break this covenant' (cf. Gen. 15:9–17; Jer. 34:18). That the book's climactic covenant is 'cut' at *Shekhem*—where Avraham built the first altar in Canaan—completes a covenantal arc stretching from Genesis 12 to Joshua 24. Both FOG and FOG Message use 'cut a covenant' to preserve the sacrificial weight of the idiom.
