He works from a personal encounter with Jesus first, then draws on the scholarship of respected Jewish and Christian scholars — because the church was Jewish before it was anything else, and those roots change everything about how you read Scripture.

Footnotes

The command to 'put away foreign gods' (*hasiru et-elohei ha-nechar*) implies that Israelites in the assembly were still harbouring idols—even after the conquest. This precisely echoes Ya'akov's identical command at the same site in Gen. 35:2: the same location, the same command, the same stubborn spiritual problem. The oak of Shekhem witnesses yet another moment of covenant purification. *Hatu et-levavchem* ('incline your hearts') is not intellectual assent but a turning of the deepest volitional centre—the *lev* in Hebrew encompasses mind, will, and emotion as an integrated whole. FOG uses 'incline' to preserve the directional force; FOG Message uses 'turn your hearts fully' to capture the whole-self reorientation implied.
