The *Refa'im* are a recurring, shadowy presence in the conquest narratives—a people of towering stature whose name is shared with the 'shades' of the dead in Sheol (*repha'im*, Isa. 14:9; Prov. 2:18; Ps. 88:11). Og's iron bed, noted in Deut. 3:11 as roughly fourteen feet long, anchors the tradition in physical memory. The fall of the last Refa'im thus carries cosmic-mythic weight: the conquest is not merely geopolitical but the defeat of primordial, death-associated forces—an early movement in the longer biblical drama of death being swallowed up in victory.
