סֻכָּה (sukkah) — the temporary booth associated with the Festival of Sukkot (Feast of Tabernacles), when Israel commemorated its wilderness sojourn under makeshift shelters. The word choice is almost certainly deliberate: Yonah, like wilderness Israel, sits under an improvised shelter watching and waiting. His position "to the east" carries the weight of exile throughout the Hebrew scriptures — east of Eden (Gen 3:24), eastward in Cain's departure (Gen 4:16). His watching posture may betray a residual, even stubborn, hope that judgement might still fall.
