The phrase "came up in a night and perished in a night" (שֶׁבִּן-לַיְלָה הָיָה וּבֶן-לַיְלָה אָבָד) employs a tight poetic parallelism — son-of-a-night it was, son-of-a-night it perished — underscoring the plant's total impermanence as a foil for the enduring weight of 120,000 human lives.
