ἐπέχρισεν (epechrisen) = “anointed/smeared,” sharing its Greek root with Χριστός (Christos, “the Anointed One”). The Messiah anoints with clay (πηλός), and the forming of clay from the earth intentionally echoes the Creator fashioning humanity from the dust (cf. Isaiah 64:8). F.O.G. preserves “clay” to keep the creation-from-earth resonance; F.O.G. Message uses “anointed” to surface the Christological wordplay embedded in the verb itself.
