ἁμαρτία... μένει (hamartia... menei) = “sin... remains/abides” — μένω (menō) is John’s signature word for abiding, used radiantly of union with Yeshua in the vine discourse (ch.15) and darkly here. The chapter closes not with the healed man’s joy but with a sobering verdict: those who refuse to acknowledge their blindness cannot be healed of it. Wilful spiritual self-deception is the one condition that seals guilt permanently.
