The Greek "ὑψώσητε τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου" (when you lift up the Son of Man) carries John's characteristic double meaning: ὑψόω means both to physically raise up on a cross and to glorify/exalt (cf. John 3:14; 12:32–34). The title "Son of Man" (υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου) echoes Daniel 7:13, where a heavenly figure receives eternal dominion from the Ancient of Days. John's irony is surgical: in the very act of crucifying Him, His opponents will be the unwitting agents of His exaltation—and the absolute "I AM" that follows is again predicate-less, intensifying the divine-name claim that the crucifixion/exaltation will vindicate.
