"The Prophet" (ho prophētēs with the definite article) is a specific messianic title drawn from Deuteronomy 18:15, where Moses promises that YHWH will raise up a prophet like himself. The crowd correctly reads the Moses-typology: bread multiplied in the wilderness, provision for a vast multitude, leadership of the hungry. John has already flagged this expectation (1:21, 25); here the crowd moves to recognition — but they will misread what kind of king this Prophet is (v.15).
