The Hebrew/Aramaic name בֵּית חֶסֶד (Beit Ḥesed) most likely means "House of Mercy" — an irony thick enough to touch: a place named for covenant-kindness where the helpless had waited for years. The pool's existence is confirmed in Johannine present tense (ἔστιν, "there is"), suggesting it still stood when John wrote. Both versions preserve the name rather than translating it, since its semantic resonance is part of the scene's architecture.
