οὐ γὰρ συγχρῶνται (ou gar syngchrōntai) = "do not use things in common" — the verb implies shared use of vessels, not merely social avoidance. Accepting a drink from a Samaritan woman's jar incurred ritual impurity under many Pharisaic interpretations. The enmity ran deep: rooted in the Assyrian resettlement of Shomron (2 Kings 17), competing claims over the location of true worship (Mt. Gerizim vs. Yerushalayim), and centuries of mutual contempt. A Jewish man initiating this exchange — alone, at midday — was a multi-layered transgression of social and ritual norms.
