βαπτίζω (baptizō) = "to immerse/dip" — a description of a physical action rooted in the Jewish practice of the mikveh (ritual immersion for purification). "Baptize" is a transliteration of the Greek, not a translation of it. The F.O.G consistently renders it as "immerse/immersing" to restore the concrete, embodied act; the F.O.G Message uses "baptize" as the established liturgical term in English-speaking tradition.
