The narrator's sudden shift to "we know" (οἴδαμεν) — first-person plural — is a striking editorial intrusion, almost certainly representing the Johannine community's collective endorsement of the Beloved Disciple's eyewitness testimony. The present participle ὁ μαρτυρῶν ("the one bearing witness") rather than a past aorist ("the one who bore witness") implies the witness is understood as ongoing — perhaps through the very document the community now holds in its hands. Both versions preserve this communal voice to honour the ecclesial dimension of Scripture's formation.
