John uses "ἱερῷ" (hierō) here — the entire Temple complex, including the outer courts — rather than "ναόν" (naon, the inner sanctuary) he will use in vv.19–21; the commerce was taking place in the Court of the Gentiles, the one area designated for the nations to pray, so the selling was not merely commercial corruption but a theological displacement — the Gentiles' only access to Israel's God was being foreclosed by a market; the doves were the prescribed offering of the poor (Lev 12:8; 14:22), making their commercialisation also an injustice to the most vulnerable worshippers.
