John consistently uses "σημεῖον" (sēmeion, sign) rather than "τέρας" (teras, wonder) or "δύναμις" (dynamis, powerful deed) — each miracle in this Gospel functions as a pointer beyond itself; "ἀρχὴν τῶν σημείων" (arkhēn tōn sēmeiōn) literally means "beginning of the signs," and the word "ἀρχή" (arkhē, beginning) deliberately echoes John 1:1 and Genesis 1:1, suggesting this is a new creative act; "δόξαν" (doxa, glory) renders the Hebrew kavod — the weighty, manifest presence of YHWH/God — so the disciples see not merely a miracle but a theophany in human form; the F.O.G renders "beginning" to preserve the Genesis echo, while the F.O.G Message uses "first of His signs" for clarity and lets "revealed His glory" carry the full theological weight.
