"Μεθυσθῶσιν" (methysthōsin) is the aorist subjunctive of methyskō, a word that unambiguously means to become drunk or intoxicated — softer translations obscure the earthiness of the scene; the social custom described is historically attested, fine wine served first when palates were keen and inferior wine when they were dulled; the irony John savours is eschatological: the Creator of wine serves the best last, inverting the world's economy of diminishing return, a pattern the F.O.G renders as "drunk freely" for candour and the F.O.G Message as "had too much" for readability.
