βαστάζων ἑαυτῷ τὸν σταυρὸν — "bearing His own cross" — John omits Simon of Cyrene entirely (present in all three Synoptics), emphasising Yeshua's sovereign self-offering. The image unmistakably echoes the Akedah: "Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and laid it on his son Isaac" (Genesis 22:6). The firstborn son carries the wood of his own sacrifice up the mountain. Jewish readers steeped in the liturgical memory of the Binding would have felt the resonance immediately.
