He works from a personal encounter with Jesus first, then draws on the scholarship of respected Jewish and Christian scholars — because the church was Jewish before it was anything else, and those roots change everything about how you read Scripture.

Footnotes

ἐκάθισεν ἐπὶ βήματος — "sat on the judgment seat" — a minority but grammatically possible reading takes the verb as causative-transitive: "he seated [Jesus] on the judgment seat." If so, John stages a moment of savage irony — the true Judge is mockingly enthroned by the very judge who finds no fault in Him. Both versions adopt the standard intransitive reading (Pilate sits), but the F.O.G Message's framing allows the shadow of that irony to fall across the scene without requiring the reader to commit to either.
