The Greek αἴρει (aírei) carries a genuine double meaning: "to lift up" and "to take away/remove." Ancient viticulture involved lifting fallen branches off the soil to expose them to sunlight — a remedial act before any cutting. The F.O.G. renders it "lifts away" to honour this agricultural nuance and suggest a patient vine-keeper at work; the F.O.G. Message uses "removes" to sharpen the contrast with what follows. Both versions set up the deliberate wordplay with καθαίρει (kathaírei, "prunes/cleanses") — which shares its root with καθαρός (katharós, "clean/pure") — a connection Yeshua exploits immediately in v.3.
