The Greek ἔθηκα (éthēka, "I placed/set/appointed") shares its root with θῇ in v.13 ("lays down") — an intentional echo: the one who lays down His ψυχή for His friends is the same one who has "laid" them in their vocation. The verb ἐξελεξάμην (exelexámēn, "I chose/selected") carries covenantal election weight — the same language used of Israel's divine choosing. The disciples' position is not earned or self-initiated but grounded in sovereign appointment, a Hebraic pattern of vocation running from Abraham through the prophets into the community of Yeshua.
