The Greek ψυχήν (psychḗn) is the direct equivalent of the Hebrew nephesh — not merely "life" in the biological sense, but the whole animated self: throat, breath, desire, personhood. To lay down one's ψυχή is to surrender not just physical existence but the entire being. Both versions render it "life" while this note supplies the fuller resonance: this is total self-giving, not mere martyrdom. The verb θῇ ("lays down") echoes in v.16 (ἔθηκα, "I appointed/placed"), creating a deliberate verbal link between Yeshua's own self-giving and the calling He places upon His friends.
