מָשִׁיחַ (Mashiach) means "anointed one"—from מָשַׁח (mashach), to anoint with oil—the rite by which kings, priests, and prophets were set apart for YHWH's service. Χριστός is the exact Greek equivalent (from χρίω, to anoint). John preserves the Aramaic/Hebrew term first, then provides the Greek translation, maintaining the bilingual texture of the original disciple community and signalling that what Andreas announces is the fulfilment of Israel's deepest royal hope. The F.O.G renders the explanation as "Anointed One" rather than "Christ" since the latter no longer communicates the meaning to modern readers; the F.O.G Message moves directly to "Messiah" and "the Christ."
