ἀμνός is specifically the sacrificial lamb—distinct from the more generic ἀρήν—and evokes a dense cluster of images: the Passover lamb of Exodus 12 (whose blood protected Israel from death), the Suffering Servant of Isaiah 53:7 ("like a lamb that is led to slaughter"), and the tamid, the daily Temple burnt offering. αἴρων (present participle of αἴρω) means to lift up, carry, or take away; the present tense signals an ongoing and universal scope—this One is, at this very moment and always, bearing and removing sin. The two images together—sacrificial victim and active sin-bearer—are too rich for any single English phrase to contain.
