He works from a personal encounter with Jesus first, then draws on the scholarship of respected Jewish and Christian scholars — because the church was Jewish before it was anything else, and those roots change everything about how you read Scripture.

The questioners' three-part framework reflects distinct eschatological figures expected in Second Temple Judaism. "The Messiah" is the anointed Davidic king; "Eliyahu" is the forerunner of Malachi 4:5–6, expected to return before the Day of YHWH; and "the Prophet" (always with the definite article, ὁ προφήτης) refers specifically to the figure promised in Deuteronomy 18:15—a prophet like Moshe whom YHWH would raise up as the authoritative covenant teacher. These were three separate figures in Jewish eschatology; by denying each in sequence, Yochanan/John clears the stage entirely for the One who will simultaneously fulfil all three roles.
