Four Hebrew terms cascade through the verse: גָּזָם (gazam, cutter/gnawer), אַרְבֶּה (arbeh, the common swarmer — from the root "to multiply"), יֶלֶק (yeleq, licker/hopper), and חָסִיל (khasil, consumer/destroyer). Whether these represent four distinct species or four developmental stages of the same locust is debated. The relentless cascade — each destroyer consuming the remnant left by the last — amplifies total annihilation poetically.
