The verse climaxes with a devastating metaphor: כִּי הֹבִישׁ שָׂשׂוֹן מִן־בְּנֵי אָדָם — "for joy (sason) has withered from the sons of men." The identical verb הֹבִישׁ (hovísh), used throughout for dying crops, is now applied to שָׂשׂוֹן (sason, gladness). Joy itself has been harvested. This is no longer agricultural crisis — it is existential desolation, the inner world mirroring the outer ruin.
