Footnotes
This is perhaps Bildad's cruelest line. With no pastoral cushioning he implies Job's dead children brought their fate on themselves. The word *pesha* (פֶּשַׁע) is not mere "mistake" but wilful rebellion — a covenant-rupture word used of political treachery and deliberate apostasy (cf. Amos 1–2). The phrase "hand of their transgression" (בְּיַד-פִּשְׁעָם) is a striking idiom: they were surrendered into the very grip of their own sin. Bildad's retribution theology, while logically tidy, is precisely what the book of Job exists to dismantle. Both translations preserve the bluntness; FOG Message adds "simply" to capture his breezy certainty.
