Eliphaz closes with collective wisdom authority ('we have searched this out'), invoking the tradition he and his companions embody. The verb *chaqar* (to search, investigate, probe) is the same word used of searching out the deep things of God (Job 11:7). The dramatic irony is devastating: the reader already knows from chapters 1–2 what Eliphaz does not—that Job's suffering is not the consequence of hidden sin. His *chaqar* has been applied to the wrong question entirely. Both translations retain this rhetorical confidence precisely to preserve the irony intact.
