The lightning bolts reply *hinenu* (הִנֵּנּוּ) — 'Here we are!' — the plural of the most charged word in the Hebrew Bible. *Hineni* is the word Abraham spoke when YHWH called him to Moriah (Genesis 22:1), the word Moses spoke at the burning bush (Exodus 3:4), the word Isaiah spoke before the heavenly throne (Isaiah 6:8). The lightning bolts hold themselves in instant, total readiness before their Creator — the very posture of the greatest human servants of God. The searing irony: the forces of nature answer YHWH with 'Here we are!'; Job, the image-bearer, has been demanding that YHWH answer him.
