Mukhach (rebuked/chastened) comes from yakach, the same root used for divine correction, legal argument, and parental discipline (cf. Job 13:3; Prov. 3:12). Suffering here is not random punishment but purposeful instruction — God as a physician administering painful but healing treatment. Riv atzamav ethan — literally 'the contention of his bones is perennial' — the bones themselves seem to protest. Ethan (constant/perennial, cf. Ps. 74:15) stresses the relentless duration.
