*Pere'im* (wild donkeys) symbolised in the ancient Near East those who live beyond society's protection — untameable, marginalised, surviving on the fringes. The poor are not compared to noble animals but to creatures that must scavenge because no pasture is given them. The subject ambiguity in the Hebrew (are these the poor or the wicked?) is deliberate; FOG leans into it, FOG Message resolves it in favour of the oppressed.
