שִׁבְעַת יָמִים וְשִׁבְעַת לֵילוֹת (shiv'at yamim v'shiv'at leilot, "seven days and seven nights") mirrors the mourning period later formalised as shiva (from sheva, seven), suggesting this ancient practice was already culturally embedded long before its later codification. כְּאֵב (ke'ev, "pain / anguish") carries both physical and emotional weight simultaneously. The friends' silence is the most eloquent—and most compassionate—thing they will do in the entire book; it is precisely when they open their mouths in chapter 3 that the damage begins.
