שַׁחַת (*shachat*) — 'the Pit/corruption' — is a term for the grave or realm of bodily decay, closely associated with Sheol. By addressing Pit and Worm as father, mother, and sister, Job performs a dark inversion of covenant household language: the most intimate family bonds of life are transferred entirely to the agents of death and decomposition. This is arguably the nadir of Job's lament—one of the most viscerally desolate images in all of Scripture. FOG uses 'Pit' for its physical rawness; FOG Message uses 'grave' to intensify the emotional rupture for modern ears.
