The subject 'they' is not explicit in the Hebrew but almost certainly refers to Job's friends, who persistently offer optimistic counsel blind to his actual reality. אוֹר קָרוֹב מִפְּנֵי-חֹשֶׁךְ (*or qarov mippenei-choshekh*) — 'light is near because of darkness' — is deliberately ambiguous: perhaps their logic is that darkness proves dawn is near, a cruel misreading of Job's suffering. The inversion of night and day recalls Isa. 5:20: 'Woe to those who call evil good and good evil.' FOG captures the bitter irony plainly; FOG Message expands the sense of wilful denial with a prophetic edge.
