*Tsalmaveth* (צַלְמָוֶת, "shadow of death" or "deep darkness") is one of the Old Testament's most haunting words, appearing memorably in Psalm 23:4 ("even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death"). It evokes not merely physical darkness but the territory of death and mortal terror. Iyyov's use here is destabilising: what was comfort in the Psalm is confrontation here — even *tsalmaveth* hides nothing from God. FOG preserves "shadow of death" for its full resonance; FOG Message adds "blazing" to capture the violent and sudden quality of divine disclosure.
