Tsalmāvet (צַלְמָוֶת) — the shadow of death — is the same word used in Psalm 23:4 ('the valley of the shadow of death'), but here without the comfort of the Shepherd. Sheol is described not as punishment but as the inevitable destination of all the living — a place of disorder (welōʾ sedārîm, 'without order/arrangement'), the undoing of creation's carefully structured cosmos. The final devastating paradox — ʾôr ('light') that is ʾōphel ('thick darkness') — inverts Genesis 1:3. Where creation began with light pushing back darkness, Sheol is where even light has surrendered. FOG's 'where even the light is murk' preserves the paradox starkly; FOG Message 'where even what little light there is feels like darkness' unpacks the existential weight for the contemporary reader.
