The verb *hacharim* (הַחֲרִימוּ) derives from *cherem*, the sacred ban of total destruction devoted to YHWH. In the conquest traditions, *cherem* meant setting apart for YHWH by complete annihilation. Here it is turned against Babylon — the very nation that destroyed YHWH's Temple is itself placed under the same consecrated destruction. Both translations render 'devote to destruction' to preserve the cultic weight, though FOG retains the military-ritual flavour more closely.
