The "nation at ease" (גּוֹי שָׁלֵיו, *gôy shālēv*) describes semi-nomadic desert peoples who had no fortified cities, no standing armies, no diplomatic treaties—their security was their very obscurity and mobility. The irony is devastating: precisely because they had no enemies and needed no walls, they had no defences when judgment came. בָּדָד יִשְׁכּוֹן (*bādād yishkôn*, "dwells alone") echoes Numbers 23:9 of Israel—the isolated nation uniquely preserved by YHWH; applied here to the desert peoples, the phrase flips from privilege to vulnerability. FOG preserves the literal "dwells alone"; FOG Message renders it "live in peaceful isolation" to make the false security explicit.
