These are the traditional mourning rites of the ancient Near East: shaving the head, cutting the beard, gashing the hands or forearms, and wearing sackcloth next to the skin. Many of these practices were explicitly prohibited for Israel (Leviticus 19:27–28; Deuteronomy 14:1) precisely because they were characteristic of pagan grief customs. Their presence in Moab's collapse signals total cultural dissolution — Moab mourns in the only idiom it knows, a mourning that is itself without hope. Both translations preserve the physical specificity of the grief.
