Jeremiah's protest is among the most theologically raw moments in the prophetic canon: he appears to accuse YHWH of active deception (*nasha*, "to beguile/utterly deceive"). The accusation is most likely aimed at the false prophets who proclaimed peace (*shalom*) in YHWH's name (cf. 6:14, 8:11, 23:17) — voices YHWH had permitted without yet stopping — leaving the people catastrophically unprepared. *Nephesh* here (*hanafesh*, הַנָּפֶשׁ) is the whole animated self; "reaches to the throat" renders its most concrete register — the blade literally at the windpipe. FOG uses "throat" for its physical shock; FOG Message opens toward the fuller existential reach of *nephesh* as life itself.
