*Beit ha-bor* (בֵּית הַבּוֹר) — the "house of the pit" or "cistern-house" — carries powerful intertextual weight. *Bor* (בֹּור) is the same word used of the cistern into which Yosef was cast by his brothers (Gen. 37:24), and will be used again of the muddy cistern into which Yirmeyahu is thrown in ch. 38. The pit resonates with Sheol, the grave, and the place of abandonment — where the living descend before their time. FOG renders "pit-house" to preserve the raw physicality and its literary echo of Yosef's story; FOG Message uses "dungeon pit" to convey the horror and depth to contemporary readers.
