The ritual described is the ancient *brit bein habetarim* — "covenant between the cut pieces" — in which animals were halved and parties walked between them, enacting a self-curse: may I become as this slaughtered animal if I break faith. The same rite appears in Genesis 15:17, where YHWH Himself — as fire and smoke — passed through the pieces alone, taking the oath upon Himself. Here YHWH turns the self-curse back on the covenant-breakers: they will become what they symbolically invoked. Crucially, the Hebrew verb *karat* — "to cut" — is the same root used for "cutting a covenant" (*karat brit*), so what is devastating in Hebrew is nearly invisible in English: those who "cut" a covenant will be "cut" like the calf. FOG uses "cut" throughout to preserve this; FOG Message uses "made" and "split" for readability.
