One of the most debated verses in Jeremiah. תִּתְחַמָּקִין (*titchammaqin*) = "slip away/evade/dodge" — a rare verb suggesting coy evasion or deliberate avoidance. נְקֵבָה תְסֹובֵב גָּבֶר (*neqevah tesovev gaver*) = "a female will encompass/surround a male." Interpretations include: (1) Israel (feminine) will actively court and pursue YHWH (masculine) — a reversal of her previous flight; (2) a woman will encircle/protect a warrior; (3) a messianic reading in which a virgin encompasses/conceives a man-child. The most contextually coherent reading in this chapter of return is the first: the great reversal is that wayward Israel, formerly fleeing YHWH, will now actively pursue Him. FOG renders "courts"; FOG Message uses "pursue" to emphasise the dramatic reversal of direction.
