The double image — *fire* that consumes and purifies, and a *patish* (פַּטִּישׁ, hammer) that shatters stone — contrasts the devastating power of authentic divine speech against the impotent dream-visions of the false prophets. The rock (*sela'*, סָלַע) may evoke not only hard granite but the stubborn human heart (cf. Ezekiel 36:26). The authentic word does not merely inform — it demolishes resistance and refines what survives. This verse is the theological hinge of the entire passage, justifying why the false prophets' words are so catastrophic by contrast.
