The cedar imagery of vv. 13–14 returns here with devastating effect: the royal house that boasted of its Lvanon-cedar luxury will cry out like a woman in childbirth—the Hebrew image of absolute helplessness (cf. Jer. 4:31; 13:21; Isa. 13:8). All that splendour collapses into anguish. The feminine address may be personified Yerushalayim or Yehudah herself, a city built on cedar now undone by judgment.
