Shallum is the throne-name or personal name of Jehoahaz (cf. 1 Chr. 3:15). He reigned only three months before Pharaoh Necho deposed him and deported him to Egypt (2 Kgs. 23:31–34), where he died. The finality of "he shall return here no more" echoes the exile motif of Deuteronomy's curses (Deut. 28:68)—return to Egypt as anti-Exodus, the covenant journey reversed.
